Introduction

Culture, arts and heritage are central to life in the Scottish Borders. They help shape our identity, connect communities, and support wellbeing, education and the economy.

Through engagement, we’ve identified eight key themes that reflect the region’s aspirations and will guide future cultural development:

  • Visibility – Promote the Scottish Borders as a vibrant, contemporary cultural region.
  • Connectedness – Strengthen networks and partnerships within the cultural sector and with other sectors.
  • Sustainability – Support long-term cultural growth through effective resource use, evaluation, and funding advocacy.
  • Traditions – Celebrate our rich heritage while encouraging innovation and attracting creative industries.
  • Ambition and Quality – Raise standards in cultural programming, education and delivery.
  • Unity and Diversity – Empower all communities, celebrate cultural identities, and ensure equal access to opportunities.
  • Safeguarding Our Environment – Lead on climate adaptation and invest in environmentally sustainable cultural spaces.
  • Skills and Education – Champion cultural learning in schools and communities.

We will share some proposed actions against each of these themes and ask for your views.
